Disclaimer

The Matrix Distribution Math Reference is an academic work. This page states, without embellishment, what that means for a reader.

Scope

The reference gathers definitions and relations from mathematical statistics and from wave form modelling. It is written to explain, not to advise. It treats no particular person, study, dataset or undertaking, and it is not directed at any one reader's situation.

No professional guidance

Nothing in the reference is offered as guidance of a professional kind, whether statistical, mathematical or otherwise. A reader who faces a decision should seek the counsel of a suitably qualified person who knows the reader's circumstances. The essays cannot take the place of that counsel, and they do not claim to.

Accuracy

The text is prepared with care and checked against the primary literature, yet no work is without error. The reference is offered as it stands. A reader who relies on a result should test its conditions, as the essays themselves repeatedly urge, rather than treating any statement here as beyond question.

No endorsement

The reference endorses no outside material, and it names none. Where an essay speaks of a family of distributions or a class of processes, it speaks of the mathematical object, and not of any product, service or body that may share the name.

Use at your own judgement

A reader uses the reference at their own judgement. The desk cannot foresee how a result will be used, and it disclaims responsibility for a use that departs from the conditions the essays set. The essays state those conditions so that a careful reader may stay within them.

Acceptance

A reader who continues past this page is taken to have read and understood this disclaimer. The terms and conditions, the privacy policy and the cookie notice are to be read beside it, and together they state the whole of the desk's position.

A last remark

The editor's wish is that the reference be useful as a work of reading. That usefulness is of the academic kind, and it is offered openly, with no promise attaching to it and no obligation flowing from it either way.

Reading the essays as a body

The essays are meant to be read together, and a statement in one often leans on a definition given in another. A reader who lifts a single sentence and reads it alone may miss the condition under which it holds, and the reference cannot guard against that. The remedy is the one the essays themselves offer: read the definition first, and read the sentence against it.

Where the essays simplify a result for the sake of exposition, they name the step that has been shortened and point to the fuller treatment. A reader who needs the full argument is invited to follow that pointer to the primary literature rather than to rest on the shortened account.

A note on translation and units

The reference is written in the English of the United States, and quantities are given in the units common there. A reader who works in other conventions should convert before comparing, since a figure quoted here carries the units in which it was stated and no others. This is a small matter of reading, but it is the sort that quietly misleads when it is overlooked.
